History

The island has seen several different flags flying over it over the centuries. Each flag symbolizes different events that shaped the island’s history.

We can trace Amelia Island’s history back to 1562 when Jean Ribault, a French Huguenot explorer, became the first recorded European to visit what was then known as Napoyca. Ribault named it the Isle de Mai. In 1565, the Spanish drove out the French from northeastern Florida and took control of the island.

The Spanish flag flew from 1573, when the Santa Maria mission was established on the island, until 1763. The Green Cross of Florida flag was hoisted by Gregor MacGregor in 1817, with 55 musketeers seizing Fort San Carlos, claiming the island on the flag’s behalf. The Mexican Rebel flag went up when French-born pirate Luis Aury laid claim to the island in 1818 on behalf of the Republic of Mexico.

After that, the Confederate flag flew over Fort Clinch on January 8, 1861, before Union forces restored Federal control of the island on March 3, 1862, raising the American flag. The island’s long and rich history culminates in the Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival, which celebrates the different nationalities that have graced the island over the years.
