History
In the mid-1970s, an effort to preserve and celebrate the local heritage led to the formation of the Duncan Lamont Clinch Historical Society. The society’s vision was to collect and interpret Amelia Island’s history for the community. Concurrently, William Decker, tasked with managing Ft. Clinch, accumulated a remarkable assemblage of historical documents, artifacts, and books centered on local and natural history. Following his passing, his son Doug recognized the importance of sharing this treasure trove with the public.
In 1977, the pursuit of a permanent museum took a formal turn under the newly incorporated “Fernandina Historical Museum.” Spurred by the leadership of Edith Ferguson Shurley and with focused fundraising, the society began to realize its vision. The pivotal acquisition of the Decker collection by the City of Fernandina Beach, which eventually gifted it to the museum, laid the groundwork for what would become an impressive and insightful repository of local history.
The museum found its first home in the historic Train Depot on Front and Centre Streets, opening its doors in 1978. The collection’s exhibition was enriched by partnerships with the Smithsonian, Ft. Clinch, and the George Davis Collection. Fast forward to 2018, and the museum successfully undertook a significant renovation, modernizing its exhibits while offering a nuanced portrayal of Amelia Island’s complex history. Through diligent volunteer efforts and substantial investment, the museum stands as a robust institution devoted to preserving the island’s legacy at the water’s edge.

One of the best ways to delve deeper into the rich history of the island is by taking part in one of the museum’s guided tours. The docent-led “8 Flags Tour” is an enlightening journey through the various nations and groups—empires, pirates, scalawags, and entrepreneurs—that have flown their flags over Amelia Island. For a spine-tingling experience, embark on the Ghost Tour, which, with its tales of haunted structures, leaves from behind St. Peter’s Episcopal Church every Friday evening.
